This was one of many exciting stops on my first 'food tour of Cornwall' with the lovely Laura and Kieran (both of whom are involved with Tasting Britain as writers, and both of whom I now count as good friends). So yeah, we ended up in a building that was home to both a chocolate factory and a brewery. IN THE SAME BUILDING OMG. So Iâll cover each of these things separately.

First up : The Chocolarder. Formed in 2012, by Mike Longman - it is indeed an actual chocolate factory (albeit a very small, artisan chocolate factory). Mike specialises in 'bean-to-barâ (which is kinda like âfarm-to-tableâ). To quote Mike - starting a chocolate business "might be a fun way to spend my days.â. Asides from being delicious (a concept which is hard to convey in text form, but believe me - Iâve eaten a whole load of these bars by now :D), Chocolarder chocolates are ethically and directly sourced from selected single origin, family-owned plantations in Java, Peru, Madagasca, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Theyâre also organically grown and pesticide free. The beans arrive in Cornwall via the medium of sail boat (more or less carbon neutral). TL;DR? DELICIOUS ETHICAL CHOCOLATE MADE BY A SUPER CHILL BEARDED MAN USING A HAIRDRYER AND OTHER STUFF.

As for the Rebel Brewing Co - they were out when we visited (and moving premises, it turns out), so we didn't get to meet any of the guys (*cries internally*) - but we did get to see their bar and where the magic/brewing happens (see pix for evidence). Rebel are a microbrewery / craft brewery established in 2010 by two former University of Exeter Cornwall Campus students , Rob Lowe and Henry Austwick. In their own words the focus on 'Classic English Ales and an eclectic range of Craft world beers.â Of particular note : The Surfbum IPA (Californian style IPA, using hops from some of the 'best surfing countries'.) and Mexi-Cocoa (a chocolate vanilla stout, Triple-infused with chocolate and vanilla at every stage of the brewingâ¦also crowned the 'Supreme Champion Beer of Cornwall 2013' by CAMRA ). Many of their beers are seasonal - which keeps things exciting and slightly unpredictable. Thereâs apparently around 30 breweries in Cornwall at this point. Yâall Cornish seem to love your beer making.
